Crystal Basics

Crystals and gemstones have fascinated people for thousands of years. Valued for their natural beauty, unique colours, patterns and formations, they have been used throughout history for jewellery, decoration, collecting, cultural traditions and spiritual practices.

Every crystal is naturally different. Variations in colour, inclusions, patterns, shape and texture are part of what makes each piece unique.

What Is a Crystal?

A crystal is a naturally occurring solid material whose atoms are arranged in an organised, repeating structure. Crystals form within the Earth through geological processes that can take thousands or even millions of years.

Quartz, amethyst, fluorite and calcite are examples of minerals that commonly form crystals.

The word gemstone is generally used for minerals, rocks or organic materials that are valued for their beauty, rarity or durability and are often polished, carved or used in jewellery.

Raw vs Polished Crystals

Crystals can be found in many different forms.

Raw crystals are kept close to their natural state. They may have rough surfaces, natural points, uneven edges and visible mineral formations.

Polished crystals have been shaped and smoothed to bring out their colour, patterns and shine. These can include tumbles, palm stones, spheres, hearts, towers and carvings.

Neither type is considered better than the other. Choosing between raw and polished crystals is simply a matter of personal preference and how you would like to display or use them.

Why Do People Collect Crystals?

People collect crystals for many different reasons. Some simply love their beauty and geological history, while others enjoy collecting unusual minerals, colours and formations.

Crystals are also commonly incorporated into meditation, intention setting, spiritual practices and home décor.

Many traditions associate particular crystals with symbolic or metaphysical qualities such as calm, confidence, protection, love, abundance or grounding. These meanings are based on spiritual and cultural beliefs rather than established medical science.

Choosing Your First Crystal

There is no right or wrong way to choose a crystal.

You might select one because:

  • you love its colour or appearance
  • you are interested in the mineral itself
  • you feel naturally drawn to it
  • it represents an intention that is meaningful to you
  • it relates to a chakra or zodiac sign
  • you simply want something beautiful for your home or collection

Sometimes the easiest approach is simply to choose the crystal you keep coming back to.
